Hi Phil,
In years past I had several WD drives - 2 different 203 MB models - one
still running today - the other died because of a faulty VLB-slot, and
recently [6 months ago], i had a 2.4GB [OEM-branded IBM] that had SMARt
- and which after having groaning noises 'for ever" fimally announced
via SMART that "this drive is no longer operational" or something to
that effect. bit the only PIO 203Mb that cost me about $552 back in '92
is still running well in a W3C system, currently drive #4 [secondary
slave] on that system. none of the drives ever had bad sectors, which I
have had with older Seagates. Current Barracuda ATA100 -7200, as Felix
said is ultra-quiet - doesn't bother me as each HDD is in their own
drawer with individual LEDs, so I can see what's working all the time.
Previous 10GB Seagate ATA-66 was also very quiet and no trouble. It's
predecessor a 4.3GB Medalist UDMA2 was/is always a little noisy - but no
faults. The 20GB Maxtor ATA100 that superseded the 10GB Seagate is also
excellent - fast and quiet. My old pair of 2.1 GB Quantum Fireball
TM2110A drives just keep running - I'm on one right now in W4FP16. Also
have a '89-'90 Quantum LPS270 [258MB] running W3C - still as silent as
the day I had it new, running MW-DMA2.

Currently awaiting delivery in a few days of 4 SCSI half-height drawers
with fans in frames which also have individual activity LEDs. currently
they are mounted internally in secondary floppy bays and SCSI activity
not seen, only heard when they [re]spin-up [using dsksleep.flt to keep
the 10K RPM ones cool].
