RS> (Continued from previous message) BG>> overrides an accidental AT&F1 which would set these to &C1 and BG>> &D2, and render the modem useless? RS> Fraid not. Try explaining how you can use all those modems RS> which have no DIP switches on Macs and Amigas. Supra even have RS> specific Mac packs, which are just a cable and Mac software. BG>> The bottom line is that you don't have to use them if you BG>> don't want to. RS>> Yes, and they are always a potential problem for some stupid RS>> fiddling. Even so called experts can get cought out with switches I just had a computer here that I sold new to a pommie electrician 8 months ago, who fried the said computer by moving the voltage selector on the power supply to 115 volt. He said he wants it fixed for free under waranty and so I told him that waranty wont fix problems caused by stupidity or user error, and to contact his household insurance company and try to get a fusion claim (fat chance, Ive seen their applications before) He then proceeded to tell me that he is an electrician and his daughter is studying to be a doctor (first yr) and they would not be as stupid as to flick a switch. ( a man must have come in throught the window at night and done it) I saw the evidence with my own eyes. Voltage selector switch was on 115volt when I first saw the machine. BG>> Tough. RS> Soorree, thats not what robust design is all about. BG>> If people don't understand something, they should leave it BG>> alone. RS> Soorree, thats not what robust design is all about. Its RS> completely doable. BG>> For Christ's sake, they're on the bottom of the modem, and BG>> shouldn't be subject to indiscriminate fiddling anyway. RS> You know as well as I do that life aint like that. BG>> And their functions are clearly listed in the docs as well, The moment you where both born , you looked down, saw your dick and had a fiddle, even though you did not know what it was for. It was there and that was good enough reason to try it out. I know, I didn't have to read my manual RS> So your 'fairly modem-literate' has blown up in your face, RS> thats the mass market modem the stupids are supposed to by, still RS> got DIP switches. BG>> I understand what they do, and they've never caused me a BG>> problem. RS> You may well not, someone who understands what decent design RS> is about may well be able to recognise that an important part of RS> decent design is useability Bill.
