BB>raised and fairly tame when I bought him but there were several trouble
BB>spots that I needed to overcome with him. I bought the book "Training
BB>your Parrot". This is a fairly good source of information. There is one
BB>part of the book that I have a bit of a problem with though, "The
BB>Tameness scale", a 10 step scale. Its a listing of things that your bird
BB>will allow at each step.
PLEASE understand that ALL parrots develop differently. Just because
somebody wrote down a list of things a parrot MIGHT do, doesn't mean
that ALL parrots at the same stage of development will do ALL of them.
What a bird can/can't/will/won't do depends entirely on its environment,
who's handled it, what it's learned from its parents or handfeeder, and
a ton of other influences.
I'd suggest ignoring the tameness scale entirely and concentrating on
what Sunny CAN do, not what he CAN'T! Focusing on the positive things
the bird can already do makes teaching new things easier. I'd also
suggest getting a few more books--relying on just one doesn't give
enough background and information. Not all birds learn the same way, and
not all methods work on the same bird.
"My Parrot, My Friend" by Bonnie Doane, and "Guide to a Well Behaved
Parrot" by Mattie Athan are both good books about parrot behavior and
both include some good training tips!
