Western Digital -- best I've ever had among them, Maxtor, and Seagate.

Seagate. The slowest drive I've ever had to use is the Seagate on my office
machine. (It is also the nosiest.) That 4 GB thing is slower than a 1993(?)
1.2 GB WD. 

In any case, get Dani's driver and replace IBM's (*S506.ADD).
