This would be from yellow onions, of course   :)
Purple onions would give, perhaps, purple?   (or some other
related shade   :)
And, (following right along,  :)  white onions, (to your reference
above  :)  transparent?  ... umm, I mean, white?   Well, maybe,
'onion skin'.
