I'm pretty new to the echo, but I've been buying and selling records for
twenty-five years; I've lost count of the unplayable, scratched-up
"treasures" I've had to diplomatically debunk to their proud owners.
The worst was a woman who brought in one of the old Sun Elvis 78s. It
was a dinner plate: gray, no grooves left, looked like it had been
played with a fork.
She asked me what it was worth to me, and I said "Nothing." She was
*furious!* Accused me of trying to rip her off (by NOT buying the
record!?), and insisted that she had played it that morning and that it
sounded "perfect". I shrugged, put it on our turntable, and the needle
just skittered, didn't track at all.
She ripped it out of my hands and stomped out of the store. I got a
call later from one of the other shops in the area; she'd apparently
been trying to sell this thing all over town, with no more luck that
she'd had with me. One dealer offered her $10 so he could lacquer it
up and hang it on his wall, and she replied that if she couldn't get
$100 for it she'd keep it.
I assume she kept it.
