Well this system draws so little current I could likely go with some
external batteries without overstressing the semiconductors.

 Heh.
When I was a bit fitter I would have constructed an inverter myself
using CMOS johnson counters with resistors to get a close
approximation to a sine wave then drive a bunch of power FETs.
What I had in mind would have been plenty rugged.

When the heck is someone going to produce a standard ATX power supply
designed from the get go to be driven from either 120 AC or 12
 volt deep discharge batteries?

I _had_ a torroid salvaged from one of those ultra high powered car
amplifiers and was going to have a go at modifying one of my spare
AT power supplies but lost that item last move :-(

Saved, thanks.
Will drop by their site today.
