Bob,
I assisted a friend in the installation of his ground-source heat pump. (I
dug the 2000' trench 5 1/2' deep for the thermal pickup loop) He has a
highly-remodeled old farmhouse, well-insulated, about 2500 square feet.
His heating bill went from $200.00+ per month (1982 period) to about half
that. The A/C runs about a buck/day as I understand, probably 1/3 or 1/4 of
what it would be otherwise.
I have no idea what the heat pump cost in relation to a furnace, probably 3X.
