Might not have to.
386/486 usually had a rechargeable battery next to the
keyboard socket. About the size of your last pinkie joint,
looks like it's wrapped in heat-shrink, maybe green or blue.
One big terminal on each end, so there's no precision work
to do. Occasionally there's a "ext-batt" multi-pin header
nearby. If so you can just cut off the rechargeable and plug
in an external battery pack. Radio shack to the rescue!
