Anecdotal stories of HD failures and catastrophies usually
stack up about even. Every HD manufacturer has about an equal
number of supporters and detractors.

What made the difference here, simply because we
pretty much had troubles across the brands, was warranty handling.
IBM's is a sad joke that takes a potentially new defective and
gives you back a refurbed doorstop. WD is nearly as bad. The only
company with a "real" system is Seagate. Not only can you check
the s/n for true remaining warranty (good for used/pulls, and
dealers who fudge), but if you have a failure you can get an RMA
online, and have a new drive shortly. If the drive is no longer
available you get a newer/bigger drive, not some refurbed trash.

I noticed the quiet new drives also. IMO there is no
difference between the mechanicals on the new ATA and the new SCSI
standard drives. Real "server duty" SCSI drives may still
be a cut above as they are still a larger form factor.
