I'm not sure it you have this totally solved, so I'll post my comments
anyway.

Which one? eCS 1.0 or eCS 1.1? It matters because each uses a different
emulation mode so a CD read failure can produce different messages for a
similar failure.
If you haven't done this already, I would try booting the CD with not
other drives on the bus. Once this works, you can start adding hard
drives until you isolate the failure.
