The portion I quoted was but a snippet of the full page. The
impression I have after reading that page was that getting a
'vendor update' was an educated guess since the author didn't
actually know that there were any or would ever be any. 

Not unlike the standard reply to "download the newest drivers"
for Windows when no one has checked to see if there are any
to download. ;-)
