Hello Wayne -

Understood - a failsafe. ;-)

CA>>> If I remember this correctly the 'sz' and 'rz' of ztelnet
CA>>> is not a 'full' implementation of either protocol. The
CA>>> 'full' versions offer many switches etc. and other

WC> Yes, I've run into that bit of info. Gotta start doing my

I've not lost the working binaries I had used btw. I don't
know how compatible it would be with KNOPPIX but I could
send the working ztelnet and ATP I used with Slackware v3.5
and see if those work for you on KNOPPIX?

For the less-than-mainstream applications compiling source is
probably the best/only way. FIDO apps are not really
'mainstream' software to the rest of the world. Believe it or
not, many have no idea what zmodem is or why they might even
want to use it. I've always accessed BBS since they were
ring-backs and it seems odd to me but I guess I'm predjudiced.
;-)

WC> Guess you'd have to CHMOD it executable as well.

Yes, you would. I was just begining to develop a system for
determining what values to use with CHMOD and I stopped
fiddling with Linux. Now I don't remember anymore - must be
getting old?

CA>> It compiles for Linux though. Howard compiled it for
CA>> himself and sent me a copy of the binary but I had already
CA>> found it then just used his instead. :-)

WC> I'll snag the source code.

I'll put the copy I have here on my server. Use:

http://www.undercoverdesign.com/dosghost/dld/ztelnet.gz

Might be helpful if the docs (manpages etc.) are with it. :-)

CA>> If/when you have the room to do it it is worthwhile to
CA>> keep a recent image copy of the main OS partition on the
CA>> hard drive.

WC> Indeed, I had just exactly this in mind myself. I also may
WC> get a USB 2.0 PCI card for external USB hard drive backup
WC> solution

You may want to "do the math" on that. It seems my daughter
said her external USB 2.0 CD burner was a bit sensitive and
required her to not use the computer while burning a CD on her
1.4ghz machine? The transfer rate might be a heavy burden
depending on the rest of the system's ability to feed the
buffers while burning (DMA speed, other bus speeds, hard drive
transfer speed, etc.)?

WC> or perhaps soon a internal recording DVD player as I've now
WC> seen them around the 150 dollar mark.

DVD-R or DVD-RW would be nice to have, yes. :-)

CA>>> You're a bit ahead of me on this.

WC>> Oh I would not say that as you've had ztelnet and ATP up
WC>> and running... I'm not there yet.

CA>> It was a bit of a puzzle. Had to add another 4 meg
CA>> ramdrive to the mini-install then sort out all the
CA>> required directories etc. but it and the original ATP is
CA>> so close to what I use on a daily basis that it was
CA>> 'comfortable' for me to use it.

WC> My default Knoppix loads 16 - 4 Meg ramdrives!!!

For the mini-install it was necessary to undo then redo the
zimage and other things. It required focus to not mess it
all up but it did work. :-)

CA>> No Qedit for writing messages but that was a minor
CA>> problem. 'Joe' under Linux would be a close match for
CA>> Qedit once I figured out the macro language for Joe. :-)

WC> thanks for the tips.

btw: The other upside to 'Joe' is there are other compiles of
it and DOS has one too. Once you learned it you could use it
with either OS.

--8<--cut

CA>> It (KNOPPIX) sure does look nice if nothing else. Nothing
CA>> too shabby about it. ;-)

WC> Not at all, most impressed here. I want to mess withthe
WC> graphic on the desktop and customise it.

Should be doable.

WC> Perhaps snag one of those Kodak disposable cameras where
WC> they offer a digital image CD along with chemical
WC> processing and put my Pit Bull up in place of those cogged
WC> wheels.

I have some of the kitten here that my brother took with his
digital camera. :-)

WC> I've already found the relavent files.

I don't recall all the options but around here Meijers stores
offer many variations of digital photo processing relatively
cheap too. If you have any photos of your dog that you like
anyone with a scanner can create a file for you to use/convert
if necessary. I think Kinkos and others will scan in material
for a price too?
