Hello Thurston -

CA>> There has always been a tendency to overstate where the
CA>> bleeding edge of technology really is in the USA. Here are
CA>> some numbers to put to all those fantasies. ;-)

CA>> http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?
CA>> pagename=FT.com/StoryFT /FullStory&cid=1069493486004

CA>> "Broadband internet began a few years ago and has reached
CA>> now 6.9 per cent of the population in America and 2.3 per
CA>> cent in the UK. Several countries, most notably South
CA>> Korea, have higher penetrations (21.4 per cent)."

CA>> "Using mobile phone penetration as an example, Hungary
CA>> (67.60), Estonia (65.02), the Slovak Republic (54.36), and
CA>> Croatia (53.50) all had higher mobile phone penetration
CA>> than the United States (48.81) in 2002. Mobile telephony
CA>> was only the start; broadband could be next."

CA>>  ==============

CA>> Some damage to our image of ourselves as technocrats eh?
CA>> ;-)

TA> Not sure Chuck. I suspect while many others talk into it,
TA> we tend to be more doers.

TA> (Kinda reminds me of the old quote that: "The English write
TA> about it, the Irish dramatize it, the French talk about it,
TA> the Italians sing about it; but the Americans do it 8-)

I will grant that statistics often misrepresent the very thing
they are intended to clarify but there is a marked tendency for
FIDO users to consider a cable connect as 'normal' and it's not
as common as many would have us believe it is based on these
numbers. Not even close to 'normal' in the USA.
