SB>Hello All, SB>I am wondering what feedback some of you would have regarding C++ Builder? I've been hoping to read some other people's feedback, too. I have the Developer's edition, but I suspect that the real difference between the $99 version and the Developer's edition is the inclusion of source code for the VCL's and perhaps a few extra goodies. I've written one "real" program in it. That was a program to list the Rodgers MIDI format files on a diskette (or subdirectory) and the title of the sone it represented. The interface was quite a bit like either VB or Delphi. If you're good at writing Delphi code, you won't have any real problems with C++ Builder. One problem I've noticed is that, anytime I attempt to bring up the HELP function, I get a dialog box indicating an error and allowing me to either continue or cancel. If I continue, I continue to get the dialog box. But, if I cancel, the box goes away and the help appears to work. What's interesting is that this ONLY happens with C++ builder, not Delphi or other things I request "help" on. SB>Does anyone have the new $99 version? After programming in several languages SB>over the years (basic, assmebler, C, pascal, VB, Delphi) I have really become SB>fond of Delphi! But, my boss has decided that I need to move on to C++ at work SB>because of the people at work that set the company standards for programming SB>tools. These people likely walk around in a daze with hands extended in front SB>them chanting..."Yes Bill Gates...Yes, oh master...". The company tandards SB>are VB, Visual C++ and a few others I wont mention. It sounds like you really like Bill. Depending on what you do, I can understand the suggestion that you look into C++. I've used Borland C++ for a long time and only moved into Delphi because I wanted to try my hand at Windoze programming. I picked up a copy of C++ Builder when it first came out because I really prefer C++ to Delphi - Generally, most machine vision applications are written in C or C++. SB>While I will continue to use Delphi for my personal development at home nd SB>side projects, I must start using MS Visual Basic and C++. What I am SB>wondering, is how compatible would the code from C++ builder be with isual SB>C++. It would be a much easier transition from Delphi to C++ builder than to SB>Visual C++. If I could create the code on C++ builder and then sneak it over SB>to Visual C++, I would be much happier. The basic C++ code ought to be the same, but I'd expect the interface (i.e. forms) to be completely different. However, I've never really used MS C++. SB>Any feedback you have on C++ Builder and the transisition from Delphi would be SB>appreciated. Or, should I just use Visual C++ for work. My other alternative SB>would be to use Visual Basic again and write DLLs in C/C++ (or Delphi and SB>don't tell my boss...hehehe) to handle routines that need speed or power that SB>VB doesn't offer. My only comment is that C++ Builder is at Version 1.0 while MSVC++ is somewhere around version 5.0. If anything, I'd expect MSVC++ to be a more stable product. I'm running C++ Builder on a 90 Mhz Pentium based notebook with only 16 Mbytes of memory. It puts a lot of stuff out to the swap file. You really need MORE memory than I have. I'm not sure how well MSVC++ would run on my notebook either. -- Jerry --- * OLXWin 1.00b * As easy as 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716 --- InterEcho 1.19 On 27 Mar 97 Henk Hamers said to all... I'm a retired statistician, and I have a pile of that kind of Pascal code lying around. Contact me via netmail or as bsmith@king.igs.net if you can (so we don't go off-topic!), and we will see what I can find for you. --- PPoint 2.00 ---------------* Origin: PC-Ohio PCBoard * Cleveland, OH * 216-381-3320 (1:157/200) * Origin: Kingston, Canada (1:249/109.11) |
