Well I aim to reduce our being spammed by not allowing new members to join the list 
without moderator approval.

Generally the spammers approach is to join the list, spam, then leave.  The
process of 
requiring approval to join seems to stuff them up :)  They also often have
obvious email 
addresses that give away the fact that they're spammers.

I do try to eliminate as many inappropriate commercial messages as possible :)
