1237e194e775 tech Hello Wayne - WC>> Me, I'm hoping DSL comes down in price. WC> There's suppose to be a way DSL can be sped up by a factor WC> of 10 or more if one's copper is within a mile of fiber WC> optic. Should that occur in fact I expect standard DSL WC> rates to drop in price. I remember when I was a sig section leader on Compuserve (many moons ago) and someone discovered that you could 'push' a modem to higher transfer rates simply by feeding the data to it faster. Seemed almost stupidly obvious but until then no one had tried it before? So CIS verified that many users could push a 300 baud modem to 450 baud but the 'trick' was the receiving modem had to be setup to receive at 450 baud as well. CIS did setup a few dialin numbers at 450 baud as a 'test' then began to charge more for the 450 access! People dropped it's use and it faded back into obscurity. Greed has killed off many a good thing. CA>> There are stories of a few people setting up WiFi for CA>> their entire neighborhood etc. Maybe when there are enough CA>> of those the businesses will lower connect charges but I CA>> won't hold my breath. WC> If I were a bit younger I'd do this myself and have a WC> following of small voluntary donations to cover my WC> operating costs. My guess is if it became a common practice the gov would tax it or make it illegal (like everything else). WC> My landlady offered to allow me to setup those Pringles WC> kludge yagi's at either end to her wideband access through WC> LinkSys but it's a bit too much of a project for me just WC> now. The Pringles yagi compares favorably to $150 US yagi which saves some of the cost but you still need the WiFi send/receivers etc. and that is something I do not have at present. It reminded me of old Popular Electronics line-of-sight laser transmit receive construction projects. I never had a use for one but the concept was fascinating. ;-) > > , , > o/ Charles.Angelich \o , > __o/ > / > USA, MI < \ __\__ --- * ATP/16bit 2.31 * ...
