gender hate groups such as NACSOW." Richard Hewitt
That quote from Richard Hewitt, whom I met at the conference on "Violence
and Abuse within the Family" that was held in Toronto recently, was echoed
by many others in attendance both men and women. I spoke to Richard for
over half an hour and found him to be an articulate and determined
individual who has devoted a large part of his time to fighting for equal
treatment before the law for men.
Richard is fortunate. He escaped an abusive marriage with enough money to
start a small printing company which he uses to publish pamphlets to aid
the mens movement. He said that he can understand the anger of abused men
and tries to channel that anger into constructive methods of trying to
change the unbalanced justice system.
"I recognise the anger of others, and my personal anger. I try to channel
this emotion in constructive ways, for I have seen far too much violence
both physical and psychological, in my lifetime".
He sees the system and those who manipulate it for political purposes as
the enemy. Women are not the targets of his fight.
"Our agencies do not always protect the vulnerable, instead they use them to
protect their own turf and justify their own existence in a bureaucratic
numbers game".
He compares the reality for men in todays Canada as comparable to "The
Trial" by Kafka. Richard says that tens of thousands of men are living in a
state of perpetual fear of being falsely labelled.
