What make is the floppy drive in question?  In working on that Celeron box
I had recently I got to the step where it wanted to make a (1.68M?) boot
disk,  and the drive chattered away and wasn't successful at it.  Changing
that out for a different drive fixed the problem.  Nothing wrong with the
one that was in there as far as 1.44M goes,  it just couldn't handle the
extended format.

Now that you mention it,  one of the two I was messing with was H-P. 
Waitaminnit...  (Looking)  Ok,  the one that came _out_ of there was NEC, 
and the one that went _in_ was H-P.  So yeah,  swap those out and you won't
have a problem,  probably.  :-)
