I've bought heatsink/fans that came with a pad that looks like an
insulating adhesive that actually is an adhesive thermal conductor. Is
that what you have? Maybe you don't need to get it off the old one.

Just bid on one on eBay. Socket 7 search. Wasn't labeled what brand or
model in description.
