I like mcedit,  which you can invoke by itself or under mc by hitting F4...

It uses function keys a lot instead of alt-whatever,  but once you get used
to that,  it's pretty functional.  I get real used to ^U (undo) for those
"oops" keystrokes,  too -- keep wanting to hit that when I'm on
this box.  :-)
