I wouldn't wait at all, it's possible the drop will only be a second or so
and if you are waiting you'll miss what's happening.

I can run

ping x.x.x.x -t > temp.txt

all night and it doesn't amount to much of a file at all, it's only one
line per second, 86k seconds in a day so it's probably going to give you
around a meg or so of file.
