I'd like to add a 4th version. In the part of Germany I came from
Altweibersommer is good for alte Weiber in that they get a reprieve
from their (insert various physical ailments and afflictions here)
before winter sets in. The idea in the little town (hamlet) I grew
up in was that Indian Summer was the time to soak up the sun to ease
the rheumatism and arthritis and maybe even fool it into a permanent
reprieve (g).
