One can, but a special "crossover" cable is required. It's usually easier
(and cheaper in the long run) to get a switch, allowing for simple
expansion, later connection to DSL or cable modem, etc.
I believe 4 port switches, possibly with a special printer port, can be had
for less than US$20 on sale nowadays. My son got his Siemens 4-port for
gaming LAN parties for $20 on sale from Best Buy about two years ago.
