Thre aren't only under certain circumstances

UNTIL they pull the plug the whole of AVT is on the Backbone.

To set up our own feeds means that some people will have to make changes to
they own feeds, and not get it from BB.

PAUL >>> 808/809
          50/99
South 635/??? Andy feeds melbourne and surrounds
670/213 Teddy feeds others Tas .......
          670.213.232 ME

If I were to alter my feed for AVT to Paul, then I would HAVE to disconnect
Teddy . if I didn't then AVT would be fed to her and would go back up the
Backbone to Paul where you would all complain that you were getting your
own mail back
IOW heaps of dupes.
If you can remember, Christian did excatly this!!!!

He was feeding from Paul, but turned the echo off because of all the RS RTL
junk. He then connected to TEDDY and picked up his first lot of mail that
contained AVT messages. Because he still had 711/934 as the host for AVT
in his tosser, all the incoming AVT mail was tossed to bundles addressed to
Paul.

NOW.... Even though he was not collecting AVT from Paul, the next time he
called Paul for Locuser & Locsysop, up went the bundles of AVT to pauls
mailer which then accepted them and dutifully tossed them into Pauls AVT
msg base.
Hey presto. Bob calls and gets heaps of mail including all the messages
that he had sent out 3 to 4 days earlier.

The rule is NO LOOPS !!!!
Connections must be linear with branches

Once I get AVT from Paul I must keep it. End of the Line.
If I pass it on to Teddy and act as the return path,
      then she MUST disconnect Andy.

The only way that we can set up AVT so we are all on a guaranteed feed if
the Backone gets cut, is to do it NOW as if the backbone didn't exist, and
only let Paul feed to the backbone.
This would cause an increase in costs for quite a few people.

QLD
David polls Paul for AVT but he MUST cut his normal feed or a loop is
created. The backbone still feeds it north as far as the point David was
getting it from. BUT NO FURTHER!! Davis continues to feed it to the same
boards he does now.
This increases Davids costs (excatly as it would Bills if he was the one
to get it and feed it to David)
In either case David MUST disconnect AVT from his current source.

SA
Some one in SA would have to poll TML and distribute it to the
other nodes AND AT THE SAME TIME disconnect the current link from SA to
808, other wise a loop would be formed
If the person getting AVT from TML (e.g.Rod Gasson) is NOT the same person
as polling 808 then thet persons costs will increase.

TAS
I would call TML and act as the feed for TAS, but Teddy would not want to
rely on me as a feed, and would continue to get AVT from Andy who is
extremely reliable as a feed. (his node has only been down once for a few
hours in six years)
I can get AVT from teddy, so to call TML for it would increase my expenses.
(I'm only doing so at the moment in an attempt to trace the black hole)
Now Christian is back, he will call TML for Locuser & Locsysop and a
few other echs, call Teddy for other echoes, and it then only costs me a
local call to Christian every two days to get ALL my mail.
The person acting as the feed to be reliable and to get a decent turnaround
would virtually be obliged to call daily. While AVT will usually scrape in
around the minute mark, by the time the increased traffic in LOCUSER?SYSOP
is added it DOES go over a minute.

MELB
Alexander Stern already makes a local 25c call every two days to gett ALL
the echos he wants (some are Internet newsgroups which are not available
through TML)
For him to get AVT from TML (or me same cost) is still an increased cost for him

The way I see it is
==============
To work out HOW everyone currently getting Avtech would still be able to get
it by a private feed, and have the plan documented.

To use the Backbone while it is still available.

Should the backbone feed be cut, then put private plan into operation.

Should current feed via the backbone become unreliable for any section of
Autralia, then they can introduce there own section (or part of their
section) of the Plan if they wish.
=======================

How Tassie would work is easy and can be put into motion at a moments notice.
The QLD part can be decided between David & Bill.
The SA part needs to be sorted out (preferably by a SA person) and documented.
I will discuss with Alex Stern some possibile solutions for his situation.

I know that everyone pointing off Paul is an ideal situation but there are
some on tight budgets that do not want to increase their expenses until
they HAVE TO.

Kind regards
Niels Petersen
