Hello Pascal -

CA>> From what I was reading, now that tuitions for colleges in
CA>> Germany will no longer be free, there may be less Germans
CA>> "doing research" in the future.

PS> It depends a bit on the field whether students do any
PS> research, but yes. Stupid move by the politicians. First
PS> they complain that Germany hasn't got enough people
PS> finishing higher education, then they make sure that only
PS> rich people can even go to university. It's only the tip of
PS> the iceberg, though, there are quite a few other problems.

CA>> They said it costs them as much as $245 US per semester
CA>> for lab fees already (WOW!) and I didn't know if I should
CA>> laugh or cry.

PS> Beats me.

I'm a bit prejudiced here. College has never been free for me
or any of my friends or relatives and we would pay more than
$245 per semester just for books _after_ paying tuition out of
our own pockets.

CA>> I _would_ like to say "Welcome, Germany, to the REAL
CA>> world". ;-)

PS> I would like to ask the politicians whether they have
PS> thought that move through, which I don't think they have
PS> beyond the fact that this will generate extra revenue for
PS> them to spend.

They only need 5 years in politics (or less) to funnel enough
tax money to their friends and relatives. After that they are
rich and any time in government beyond that is just 'extra'.
They have no motivation to think long-term. They don't have to.
:-)
