Thanks Tim for your reply as to my story about being forced to use the bike
lane even though it happened to be on the sidewalk. You mentioned about the
right to use a whole lane if a cyclist deemed it necessary. I've read a few
messages here and others have also said that if there was a bike lane the law
states that a cyclist must use it. I understand that if there was any debris
a cyclist could let the officer know if he/she was stopped. I wonder if a
bicycle lane was filled with slow riders could a rider in training move out
into the street if he was moving faster than those on the path. Some would
argue that if you are training you should go out into the country. many
cyclist don't have the luxury or the time to go out into the country and if
your moving at the speed of cars why shouldn't you have the right to be in
the street. This is precisely going back to when I was told to use the bike
lane by the police officer. They are justifying the lane being there. Lanes
that go up and down side walk as well as those on the road were not design
to be ridden at fast speed. Many man-hole covers, cracks in the road,
beginner and slow rider and debris prevent that.
