Hello Jasen -

CA>> I think the two keywords for tar to tape are SLOW and
CA>> UNRELIABLE.

JB> if it's with second-hand hardware that's probably true.

The Colorado Jumbo was new at the time. I was the consultant
that ordered, installed, and set it up at work. ;-)

Granted, a 'Jumbo' is the low end of tape drives (or was).

JB> if you have a lot of data. (like, say, a genome)

Genome as in DNA research?

JB> tape backup is cheap,

Per megabyte tape is not cheap, check again.

JB> and rugged...

Tape becomes brittle, the binder fails allowing the oxide to
fall off the tape, it stretches, and it breaks. Rugged?

JB> a tape can withstand dust better than a removable disk,

??? What gives you that impression?

JB> and stratic electicty better than a removable drive

Static electricity isn't a huge problem in my universe.

JB> and takes up less space

Depends on the tape format. Some are quite large.
