The National Anthem
I don't know about you but I just can't get excited about these Olympics
and I'm willing to bet that this is the case all over.
BTW, who was the genius who thought that people would stay up late to
see Olympic hockey,.
The Sidelines
Had to laugh at the way that Michigan was declared the winner of this year's
recruiting class. I laughed because they were talking about some of the great
classes of the past as in hindsight and NOT as they WERE ranked when they
were looked at during that time. Every one of Faust's classes at Notre Dame
were considered either 1st or 2nd in the country at the time and yet, they
won nothing. The last bunch of nobodies at Notre Dame were also considered
the tops of their class (Hell, Beano Cook awarded multiple Heismans to the
most disappointing of them all, QB Ron Powerless er Powlus). I'm not saying
that Michigan didn't get the best class, just that it's way too early to
say that they did.

Did you know that of the Top 10 kickers by pay, only 3 played for playoff
teams last year.

Psst, Jerry -- Sherman Lewis. Got head coach written all over him. If he
doesn't win the job, he should find a college team that needs a head coach.
Or he could change his name to Shula...:-^
The Dugout
Baloney. That's all I have to say about Baseball Weekly's contention
about MLB's popularity. For those that don't get BBW, here's the tripe:
Before anyone dismisses baseball's popularity, believing that the NFL
and NBA has greatly surpassed America's pastime, consider this:
Michael Jordan received the most votes of any player in the recent
balloting for the NBA All-Star game, 1,208,235.
Ken Grifeey Jr. received 3,514,340 votes in last year's All-Star
selection, which not only tripled Jordan's total, but were more
than cast in the entire NBA voting.
Poppycock. By the time that MLB and the NBA cut off voting, more than
3 times as many people have attended MLB games as have attended NBA
games (Where most of the votes are cast). Well, DUH, of course 3 times
as many people are going to vote for MLB players when you've got 3
times as many people at the games (2.5 times more than the NFL and
3.2 times more than the NHL).
Oh BTW, the NBA's All-Star game had 408 members of the media from
outside the US, up from 260 last year. Think they were there hoping
to spot Ken Griffey Jr. in the audience? :-)
****
Oh and there was another headline concerning the Cubs and the number
of their games being reduced because of the popularity of Buffy the
Vampire Slayer. The headline read "Can Buffy pronounce Grudzielanek?"
Hell, Harry can't even pronounce his own name on many days. He says
their name backwards because he do it normally.:-)
The Baseline
2 ball? P U ball. This is even worse than the Legends game..
I nearly vomited listening to Cheryl Miller gushing about it. The ABL's
dunking contest was a hell of a lot more exciting than this abortion from
the geniuses (smirk) of the NBA. Oh and celebrity coaches? Puhleeze, how
low has the NBA stooped to these days?
Oh BTW, there are players that thought 2 ball was laughable and were more
than a little bit upset that the slam dunk contest was terminated.
****
Speaking of the ABL, it appears that the WNBA is really scared of the
world seeing how inferior it really is to the ABL. If you really believe
the excuses from Val "The Albino" Ackerman, you need to come back to this
planet. Ackerman says that they're so busy that they're not even having
an All-Star game. You wanna know why? It's because all the stars play in
the ABL and they hope to get many of them to defect by the time that they
do play their first All-Star game. I'd even be willing to bet that if they
don't get many to defect that they move the game from 1999 to 2000.

Had a good laugh when the Mavericks announced a basketball camp. I was
laughing because I was wondering if Dennis Scott was going to be in
attendance. For those that don't get this, rewind back to the event
that started the wheels turning on the trade that sent Scott to Dallas.

Hey, folks, if the Bulls don't start getting their act together, their
reign could end very early in the playoffs. Maybe I'm hoping too much.
Their injuries and malaise will probably disappear just as the playoffs
begin, kind of like last year.
****
Speaking again of the Bulls, if Krause dismantles this team, it will be
at least 5 and most likely 7 years before they ever get to the Finals
again. They have no replacement for Jordan, Caffey needs one year as
the starter to be ready for the playoff wars and Kukoc is a pale
imitation (no pun intended) of Pippen. Unless they can convince free
agents to sign for less than their worth, the Bulls will need to
develop the talent needed to replace the Big 3 of Jordan, Pippen and
Rodman.
****
I know that the Suns' fans think that they got the steal of the trade,
however; I think that Finley is reaching far more of his potential
than Kidd. He's been playing like Scottie Pippen and his game has
become well rounded. A lot of people might not see how good he has
become because he plays in Dallas and it's a shame because he's got
All-Star written all over him.

If the rumored trade that would send Mercer and Knight away from the
Celtics and would result in Mashburn going to Boston and Mitch Richmond
going to Miami turns out to be true, I'll lose a lot of respect for
Rick Pitino. There's no way that they get any kind of value from Mashburn
while giving up Knight and Mercer.
