Microcom had a couple different modems that could use either serial or 
paralell...serial in Dos OR Windows...Paralell was Windows only. Part of the 
problem was that the technology used was somewhat proprietary, so that no one 
could write apps that could take advantage of the paralell modems, such as a 
"paralell fossil" or other software, such as a BBS or mailer.
If you hook your modem up to the paralell port, the BBS or mailer won't know 
where to look for it.
It looked like a very promising technology, but no one supported it, so it 
kinda just sat there... :(
