Hi Stephen,
Greeting from across the Tasman.
Don't know if the following is relevant, but passed on from from an NZ
friend, "Consumer July 2003 number 427 [www.consumer.org.nz]" :

    Design fault or deliberate ploy:

The Epson Stylus Photo 915/925 use ink cartridges fitted with
computer chips. These chips warn the printer when it's running low
on ink. At this point the printer software duly passes on the
message: "Black [or Color] ink out", and tells you to replace the
    cartridge.

But it's not true. The chip merely *estimates* the level of ink,
and it errs heavily on the side of caution. The user has no say in
the matter. the printer stops working, and won'tcontinue until a
    new cartrodge has been fitted.

To see how much ink is being wasted, our testers used a "reflasher"
device to reset the chip and trick the printer into carrying on.
This is not an easy solution for the lay person.

Regards,
Mike
