I ran Easycleaner as recommended by Bryann and then defragmented the drive. Although the 40GB disk was only about 10% full, it was indeed badly fragmented. Bad FAT32. The PC is now much more lively again and does not freeze up anymore. I think it was still faster half a year ago, so maybe I'll go ahead and format the disk when I have time (all important data are on the OS/2 server, only the programs have to be reinstalled).
