LOL.  Thanks for that Saturday morning funny!

But do note that the great ftsc oracle proclaims that "The serial number..",
NOT "The OPTIONAL serial number..."  :D

In addition, the "as long as it is unique" implies that it is not to be an
empty field.

So.. it is indicating that, as a minimum, there must be a number, and serial.
But it does not say consecutive serial numbers either.  ;)
