Maynard,

Have you looked in the registry?  Your solution may lie there.  I had 
sort of the opposite problem.  I manually cleaned v4 from the acobat 
directory and installed v5.  After that when ever I tried to open an 
acobat fie it complained it could not find v4.  Finally I used the 
uninstall function and that cleaned out the registry and then 
reinstalled v5.  If you can figure out the innotek entrys it may solve 
your problem.
