Not true. Microcom, for example, put a coupon in with their cheap (really
cheap) 28.8 V.FCs to let you upgrade to V.34 for US$39, which seems quite
reasonable to me.

What I don't understand is why it's more expensive to upgrade 14.4 to V.34
than V.FC to V.34. The modems are identical.
