Yeah it is, if the machines are W2K and XP you can disable netbios completely.

As for the difference, I believe it's protocol only, it's sort of like
using IPX or TCP, it's a layer that can be changed but the functionality
for filesharing and such is unaffected. I think the big difference is to
use SMB, all browsing functionality depends on DNS where with netbios it
was broadcast dependent.

But take all this with a grain of salt, this is not an area I have much
experience with.
