That's right, the Panasonic W1 is the only prosumer grade multistandard
VCR on the market. Latest prices I've seen are around $2000, but check
around.
I use one regularly at work.
You can feed NTSC, SECAM or PAL video into the W1, and, by pressing a button,
record a tape in any of those formats. You can play a tape from any of those
formats, and select which format you'd like to have come out of the W1 for
viewing on a monitor or dubbing to another VCR.
How good is it?
Well, everybody's their own best critic. VHS dubbing doesn't do ANY format
any favors. The boxes that do smooth interpolation between NTSC and PAL
frame and line rates are tens of thousands of dollars. A W1 dub shows some
jerkeyness on smooth motion (especially animation), and a little jitter,
but our corprate clients who are making a handfull of dubs of a sales piece
for an overseas office seem pleased. (Actually, I can't view the results
directly, since we don't have a PAL monitor. I have to "reconvert" the
video back to NTSC to view, greatly exaggerating any errors.)
