Chris,
CT> I'm glad I purchased a mature hen also. They were put together last
week,
CT> and have already been checking out the nest box.
That sounds great!!
CT> I have 2 pair of Orange Wings and 1 pair of Mexican Red-Heads. I plan
n
CT> getting a pair of Blue Fronts as soon as we can afford them.
Have you notice any visual differences in the Orange Wings? I have a pair
that
have not been sexed..only visually. One of them is in the box now. I have
read
somewhere that the male has an extra orange feather somewhere.
I really love my Green Cheeks (politically correct).
I just received a bulletin from the Aviculture Society of Aviculture that has
a
rather interesting article in in of the studies they are doing in Mexico with
the Red Lored and Red Head. They are putting up nest boxes for them to use.
It
seems to take about three years for them to accept them.
Seems that these Amazons have regional dialects. That a bird from 200
kilometers away does not speak in the same dialect as the ones that they are
studying. Wonder if this makes for uncompatible pairs.
Another interesting thing that they have found is that the chicks that they
are studing and taking stastics on are only fed twice a day by the parents.
It is once in morning and once in the evening. They seem to kepp the same
weight gain as a chick that we would hand feed every three hours around the
clock. Kay Tee is involved in these studies.
Are you going to the AFA convention in New Orleans? Is anybody? Lots of stuff
on South American birds.
