It's a function of functionality, the more flexibility they give you the
more difficult it is to provide a secure product. Mac OS used to be the
secure one, in the past few months I think OSX has had more exploits
discovered than any other OS. Why? Because it's a lot more flexible than
past Mac OS, it's unix..
Think about it, a browser that can't do popups or scripts or use ocx or try
to automatically determine file type would be much more secure, an email
client that was truly text only would be much more secure, etc..
The question becomes one of balance, is it worth more to be able to include
a script in a media file or is it worth more to be able to trust that a
media file isn't hiding some script that's going to fire off the browser
and send it to places unknown?
Personally I believe it would be most valuable if choices like that were
grouped together into one system wide control interface/page and the user
was allowed to make that choice, that's the definition of flexibility for
me. Don't assume everyone want's the same thing and put the power to turn
this stuff on and off easily into the hands of the users instead of
assuming they are idiots who need programmers to make all the decisions for
them. Make it simple for users to secure their boxes at whatever level they
want, then hit save and email a security template to each other so the ones
who know what they are doing can help the ones who don't.
