If you looked at my signature, you'd have seen that I am a PADI Master
Instructor (been one since 1985, an Open Water Instructor since 1978). I am
well aware of my association's position on mask position. I always tell my
students the official party line and then point out that I don't necessarily
agree with it. I do not force them to wear their mask around their neck, but
I warn them not to come crying to me if it gets washed away.
If the water's rough enough to wash away a mask, it stays on my face (with
the regulator in my mouth). If it's calm, I move it out of the way or thread
it onto my arm. The boat guys don't seem too concerned as I use very
unambiguous arm signals to indicate that I'm OK.
And yes, I took flying lessons. Never had to wear a mask at all there.
