That is my biggest problem. I have run out of sunny locations for
them. I have a veggie garden that is in my sunniest spot. I have
7 citrus trees....so I've run out of sunny spot. Yes it is
usually beneficial to have some shade in late afternoon. Another
problem with roses in Florida is they don't go dormant like in
more northern areas.  They bloom pretty much year round and burn
themselves out.
I guess your suggestion on finding a local rose expert to find out
varieties that have less disease problems is the best one.  I
haven't grown roses in a while so don't know what's best for here
now.  Isn't Oregon where you are a humid area also?
