    About what I predicted when proponents of mandatory school uniforms 
claimed they would end gang "colors".  Gang members even adopt a particular 
color shoelace as "colors" when deprived of other ways.
    Schools will not eliminate gangs by adopting uniforms, nor will they 
eliminate some kids having the "status" items others lack: expensive 
sneakers, wristwatches, etc. (all of which cost more than the "in" brand of 
jeans).
