I claim no particular expertise with PC monitors, but I did
build and maintain a couple of Heathkit TVs back during their
heyday. If you find that big "suction cup", get a medium to
heavy duty wire, attach it to a good ground and insert the probe
end under the suction cup. You'll probably discern a reaction.
Do that a couple of times, the the critter will be dead enough
to play with.
From my EE degree, there is no essential difference between a
color CRT and a triode except that a color CRT is effectively a
triple triode with each grid being separately triggered and
focused. The focusing is done by magnets around the neck of the
tube - and this is a little foreign to straight up tube
electronics.
But all those magnets and electron beams and triode phosphor
targets are all in the realm of alignment and focusing. Your
problem is apparently in the power supply and/or flyback
electronics, which is more in line with the good old power
electronics of the days of yore (and mine ).
But I'm really not current with all of that. I went to school
and learned how to design sonar systems using discrete
components. When I finally (years later) got to a position
where I was actually designing sonar systems, it had nothing to
do with triodes, capacitors, or CRTs. I designed sonar systems
by writing software requirement specifications for (mostly)
signal processing.
Now I'm retired and taking it a lot easier. If the damn CRT
blows, it just gives me an excuse to buy a flat screen LCD
monitor.
Cheers/2,
Jerry
