We don't need a passport for Mexico or Canada, but we do need a birth 
certificate and a picture ID to get back in (and they won't let you OUT if 
your paperwork isn't in order for re-entry).  Of course, most European 
countries are smaller than the majority of our states... you can quite 
realistically visit three countries in a day... here in Los Angeles, the 
nearest state line is a little over 200 miles (about 325km) away.
