MP> RF{ I just talked to a friend of mine who is going to school as a
MP> RF{ substance abuse counselor. She also has a really interesting book
MP> RF{ about all the disorders from ADHD to substance abuse. She is
MP> being RF{ taught that although both alcohol and ADHD have a chemical
MP> imbalance RF{ in common there is no proof at this time they are related
MP> in any way RF{ other than the fact I mentioned above and also the fact
MP> the ADHD RF{ people have a tendency to abuse alcohol or drugs for
MP> self-medication RF{ perposes. I will be going over this book as it has
MP> the criteria for RF{ many disorders. I thought I would bring this to
MP> the attention that RF{ this is what is being taught in the modern
MP> school on ADHD.
MP> I said this months ago. ADHDers seek self medication.
Yeppers, I remember that. I posted this so people understood that it is
something they are still teaching today. It took me a while to understand
this one though. It didn't seem to make sense. When my daughter was
abusing alcohol (she never got physically addicted), they told me it was
to cover up what she felt was her inadeqencies. That she could not handle
her personal problems. This came from professionals working with children
and alcohol or drugs. After doing more research, I found out it she
robably
is ADHD, but never diagnosed. She is suppose to be manic depressive, but
it is not severe. In high school a hospital said she had an impulse
disorder.
Putting it all together today, I understand it more. Unfortunately, these
professionals think because you are a parent you can't understand alot. So
they give you bits and pieces without giving a whole picture or diagnosis.
Of course we are talking almost 10 years ago, when it knew something was
wrong, but didn't get real answers. Nor did I know how.
