There was/is an extended format for 3 1/2" floppies that M$
used for certain utlitie diskettes. I missed most of that and
am now at the 'recovery console' CD time-frame with W2K. 

I did, however, experiment with every extended format utility I
could find for DOS and found that when they failed it was
generally a limitation of the drives I was using.

That may be a factor but I'm not saying a drive that won't do
an extended format is 'bad' or 'broken', only that certain
drives did not allow the head to travel beyond the accepted
'last track' position while other drives did. :-)
