Surprisingly enough (and as you've probably seen by now) conversion of
.HLP to .INF files consists solely of munging the fourth byte (at offset
3) from 0x10 to 0x01 (or vice versa).  That suggestion got me far enough
to solve my immediate problems.

I have the Hobbes CDROM and found ViewHelp on it just now and it works as
you say.  That's one step better!

Of course, the best would still be if somebody knew of a source where I
could get a list of WATCOM error numbers to match the messages... the .HLP
file unfortunately doesn't seem to contain them.  I'll figure it out if I
work at it long enough.  Thanks, Florin!
