I think I've done that (well, a rename actually). I was testing whether
W2003 acts the same as NT4 and W2000 if boot.ini is missing. I found that
all three systems (plus, I think, XP Pro) will attempt a boot from the
default location if boot.ini is unreadable. That is, c:\winnt for W2000 and
c:\windows for later.

I expect that the Recovery Console would allow me to fix damage to c:\ntldr
etc. I believe it can also rebuild boot.ini if you have a nonstandard
install location.
