PS> Huh? Modern distributions have either a) an automounter running or b) PS> icons on the desktop to access, for example, the CDROM drive - and if PS> you click on that, it automatically mounts the disc. Well, I used the KNX_-hdinstall thing and I do get a icon on the desktop for the floppy - not the zip or the CD drive though, but when I click on the icon, I get a message that says "Unable to run dir/file:/mnt/floppy" I've worked my way up the tree into root and see the /mnt section, has hda, and a couple of other things in it, no floppy, but when I click on HDA I get zero files, zero (something esle.) :) PS> Windows 98SE or anything not of the NT line also doesn't have any PS> security, no matter what applications you use or don't use. There is PS> simply no way to achieve real security with FAT as the underlying PS> filesystem. NTFS is a different story. Yes, and that is a key reason for me to want to embrace this thing - but jeeze it's getting damn hard to do so! PS> I'm amazed that people still defend Windows and MS applications after PS> all those security holes and privacy issues (like Word documents PS> carrying tons of information about the system they were written on and PS> about the document's history). that last part is not in W98Se, but it's also the reason I won't upgrade to later version of Windows. :) But a point here: I'm neither a Lx or Win basher, just a guy trying to get a system that's somewhat easy to use and as secure as possible. At THIS time Lx fails on point one - I can't get it to work at all other than getting the dialer, the mail reader and the browser to run - but then since I have no access to any storage device, what's the sense in surfing the web? :) W98SE works like a champ for ME - it has some warts in the security stuff, and I'm aware of them but by running virus protection etc, have been able to keep from a major disaster. --- MultiMail/Win32 v0.43* Origin: Shakey Jake's *ALL FREE BBS* Santee, CA (1:202/1324) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 202/1324 10/3 106/2000 633/267 |
