If you don't mind doing a little work, it is conceivable to mount an external
modem (with nice display) inside a computer case, provided that adequate
cooling is provided for it. I've drilled out a few cases in my days, and
usually have 20 to 30 LEDs (red, yellow, blue, and green) mounted in one of
the knock-out panels in each of my cases. All powered from the +5 supply
line, watching current capacity (wattage) of the power supply of course.
Who needs a Christmas tree in the computer room? ;)
